1.5. վśṣoپ (peculiar allegation)

When in spite of the existence of a cause, the effect is absent, then it is called վśṣoپ[1]. Generally, when there is a cause, there is an effect. But, when there is no effect, although all the causes are present, it is called վśṣoپ, which is resorted to manifest some speciality. In the verse, niḥsattvasya samudrasya[2] ……………etc. of the ٱśDZ貹ś, it is said that he (miser) is an ocean without any current and a tree without any shade. Though the miser is attached to the earth, his behavior is beyond this world. In the verse, the causes like ocean and tree are available without the effects like current and shade. Hence, the verse is a good example of the figure վśṣoپ.
