Birth-day celebration of Lord Nrisimha (Man-lion)
Among the various merits of performance of this Vrata, it is held to be ushering in victory for kings (Vijayada). Therefore, it is pertinent that a king should perform this celebration. The 14 th of the bright-fortnight of Vaisakha with or without the conjugation of the asterism Svati is prescribed for such a vrata (86.2-5).
278 The ritual: It is performed in the evening (savahna) in a kusuma-mandapa (a pavilion bedecked with flowers erected to the N.E. of one's house). On the altar is arranged rice in a heap and a new jar, without any damage, filled with water, white-washed, woven with rounds of thread, with five kinds of leaves, cowdung and some jewel, is kept on it. Then, Varuna is invoked in it and offered worship. On a silken piece of cloth spread on the jar is now placed the golden idol of Nrisimha and is worshipped with Sodasopacara (sixteen articles of offering) while reciting the formula in 85 Anustubh metre with intermittant offering of Arghya Another round of (water). The Yajamana is required to keep awake the whole night while reading from the Puranas. worship is done in the next morning and the idol is given away to a suitable brahmin. Then, follows entertaining a number of brahmins at a feast after which the king is allowed to take his food (parana) with family and friends (6-13). 85. Perhaps here is a reference to the formula of lord Nrsimha as found in Saradatilakam, XVI, pp.379 ff. and quoted below. "Ugran viran mahavisnum ivalantan sarvatomukham / Nrsimham bhisanan bhadran mrtvumrtzamnamanyaham" //
279 A man who performs this Vrata in the manner as specified above even if he may be a killer of brahmin, woman or child, a thief or a sleeper on the bed of guru (gurutalpaga) etc. severed of all sins, he attains to the world of Visnu (14-15).
