2.12. Rudra as Nīlaśikhaṇḍa

The word īśṇḍ is used to designate Rudra as the possessor of blue-tufts

jalāṣabheṣaja īśṇḍ 첹ṛt.[1]

Sāyaṇācārya in his commentary interprets the term īśṇḍ as:

īśṇḍ īvarṇakapardopeta | anena nityatāruṇya uktam.[2]

Sāyaṇācārya expresses the term īśṇḍ by the word anena. The eternal-youth of Rudra is spoken of by means of this name or epithet īśṇḍ. According to Whitney, īśṇḍ is one who possesses ‘dark (ī) crests.[3] Lord Ś is also called Kapardin or one who has matted hair and īś or one who has blue coloured hair.[4]
