This is an English study of the Nighantu and its commentary called the Nirukta by Yaska. The Nighantu is an ancient Sanskrit lexicon dealing with the words of the Vedic language. This essay presents a detailed analysis of the extant five chapters of this text and examines it's authorship, tracing meanings of words through Vedic texts by providing a comparative study involving Sayana's interpretations and connections with other texts like Amarakosa.

. Gavau: The word is used in four places in the
nominative dual form. In RV. III.53.17 S膩ya峁嘺 comments
gacchata iti gav膩艣vau (two horses yoked to chariot).
RV.VI.27.7. it means a艣vau, according to Sayana. In RV.
In
X.27.20 he explains 'horses which are going towards enemies

or sacrifices. In RV.X,85.11, he explains 'the bulls
in the form of the sun and the moon.

4. Gavah: It is used in the nominative plural at ninety-
eight places. In seventy one places, it means cows and in
four places it is explained as pa艣avah. The word is used
to mean rasmayah in ten places. In eight places it is in
the meaning of stutayah or stutilak峁峁嚹� v膩cah. In RV. I.38.2.
Skandaswamin comments: gavah, asva atra gava岣� ucyante.
S膩ya峁嘺 interpretes it as cows (yatha gavo rananti). At
VIII.20.21, S膩ya峁嘺 comments on gavah: gava艣ca yu峁an matr-
bhutah.
