Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Bhrigu� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

The sages were born of fire by Ѳٳ after Lord Ś’s curse abandoned his body. The same fire produced the supremely stunning ṛg. ṅg from aṅgars, Atri from the crest and Ѳī from the rays were produced. From the hair Pulasty was originated. After that from the long hair Ѳٲ貹ī Pulaha was produced. ղṣṭ was born from the brilliance of fire. ṛg received the divine daughter of the sage ʳܱdz as his wife. From that wife ṛg received twelve devotional sons who performed their sacrifices. Their names are Bhuvana, Bhouvana, Sujanya, Sujana, Kratu, Vasu, ѳܰ, Tyājga, Vasuda, Prabhava, Avyaya and Daksa. Thus these twelve are known as Devabhṛgu.

After these ṛg produced some inferior Brahmins from the womb of Paulamī. Their names are great fortunate Cyvana and ĀԳܱԲ. ĀԳܱԲ’s son was Ourva and his son was Jamadagni. Ourva became the originator of ṛg’s dynasty. ṛg’s tribe promoters� names were–ṛg, Cyavana, Āpnuvnā, Ourva, Jamadagni, ٲⲹ, ٲṇḍ, Nadāyana, Vaigāyaan, Vitihavya, Paila, Śounaka, ŚܲԲⲹԲ, īԳپ, Āyeda, ṣaṇi, Vaihinari, Virūpāksa, 鲹ܳ󾱳ٲⲹԾ, ղśԲ, ī, Lubdha, Sārvaṇika, վṣṇ, Paura, , Ailika, Anantabhāgina, ṛg, , 첹ṇḍ, Javina, īپԲ, Ѳṇḍ, ṇḍⲹ, ṇḍܰ첹, Phenapa, Stanita, Sthalapinda, Ś屹ṇa, Ś첹ṣi, , Soudhika, ṣuⲹ, Kutsa, Ѳܻ岵ⲹԲ, Mānkāyana, Devapati, ṇḍܰdz, , Sānkṛtya, ٲ쾱, Sarpi, ۲ñ辱ṇḍⲹԲ, Gārgāyaṇa, ⲹԲ, Gārhāyṇa, ҴṣṭⲹԲ, Bāhyāyana, ղśⲹԲ, ղ첹ṇiԾ, Sārngarava Yajñeyi, ṣṭⲹṇi, Lālāti, ܱ, Laukṣinya, 貹ṇḍ, Āܰ쾱, Soucaki, Koutso Paingalāyani, ٲⲹԾ, ⲹԾ, Koutili, Kouhastika, Souha, Sokti, Sakauvākṣi, Kousi, Cāndimasi, Naikajihva, Jihvaka, ղⲹ, Loulrairina, Sāradvatika, Naitisya, Lolākshi, 䲹ṇḍ, Vāgāyani, ĀԳܳپ, Pūrṇimāgati and Asakrt. Generally, these five sages were called as the Pravara –ṛg, Cyavana, ĀԳܱԲ, Ourva and Jamadagni.

After that the names of other sages who were born in ṛg dynasty–Jamadagni, Bida, Paulastya, Baijavṛt, Ubhayajāta, ⲹԾ, Śākatāyana, Ourveya and ܳٲ. They had three holy Pravara–ṛg, Cyavana and ĀԳܱԲ. There was prohibition of mutual marriage among these sages. The other sages are ṛgdāsa, 貹ٳ, Grāmyāyani, Katyani, Ā貹ٲ, Bilvi, 첹ś, , 岹ⲹԾ, ĀśⲹԾ and ū辱. Among these, there were five Pravaras named ṛg, Cyavana, ĀԳܱԲ, Ārṣṭiṣena and ū辱. There was also prohibition of marriage in the sages. The other sages were Yaska, īپ󲹱ⲹ, Mathita, Dama, ԳٲⲹԾ, ѲñᲹ, Pili, Cali, , 岵ٳپ, ś辱, śⲹ辱, , Ś岵辱, Saura, Tithi, Gārgīya, , Pauṣṇāyanaand 峾ǻ岹. In these sages the Pravara were ṛg, Vitiharva, Revasa and Vaivasa. There were also some ṛg dynasty’s sages named�ŚⲹԾ, Śāktākṣa, Maitreya, ṇḍ, ٰṇҲԲ, Raukmāyani, Āpiśi, Ā辱ⲹԾ and Hansajihva. Among them the Pravaras were ṛg, ղⲹś and پǻ. And the last some sages were ⲹԲ, ۲ñ貹پ, Matsyagandha, Pratyaha, Souri, Oukṣi, Kardamāyani, ṛt岹 and Sanaka. In these sages the Pravaras wre ṛg and ṛt岹. Among these sages the mutual marriage was Prohibited.[1]
