110 In the Dharmasūtras, libations are prescribed to be offered
to the eight forms of the goddesses associated with Rudra¹54.
In the Purāṇas Umā appears as the other name of Sati and
Haimavati-Pārvati. It is mentioned in the SP, that the great god
Brahma had humbly served Sakti and when the goddess became
pleased he by her grace created her as the daughter of Dakṣa and
Asini¹55. It is mentioned that even Dakṣa performed penance to obtain

the goddess as his daughter. Dakṣa went to the northern side of the
ocean of milk and began a penance with controlled mind, keeping the
in his mind with a desire to see the goddess in person. And the
goddess pleased by his penance appears before him 156.
Daksha requests the goddess to be born as his daughter and
be the enchantress of Siva¹57. The goddess agrees with a pre-condition
that if ever in future Daksha would be less respectful to her, she would
cast off her body, withdraw her self to her soul and take some other
form 158. The rest of the episode is well known that Sati immolates
herself in the sacrificial altar of Daksha due to the disregard shown to
her and the insult to her husband Siva.
Siva aggrieved at the loss of Sati and inconsolable wanders
all over carrying the corpse on his back. Viṣṇu to bring Rudra back to
normalcy flings his discus from behind at Sati's body. The body parts
