Method of making a Mantra potent
Mantra is to be made potent through the process known as 'Purascarana'. The meaning of purascarana is repetition. It is stated by the Brihattantra-sara 98 that merely being initiated is not enough but the mantra without Purascarana is useless by itself and is compared with a lifeless body. 97 Malati Madhava C.24, V.120 b, 121; P.768 98 Brihattantra-sara C.I, P.66,67
chapter 1. Introduction Mantra siddhi- Time and the indicators. 48 48 99 The Malati Madhava9 speaks of the time span for 'Mantra-siddhi'. It states that a 'Bija-mantra' is successful in childhood, in youth a 'Mantramantra' is successful and 'Mala-mantra' is successful in old age. The mantra which has been initiated is to be checked whether it is successful to the sadhaka or otherwise. The texts of tantra like the Sri-vidyarnava-tantra 100, the Brihattantra-sara 101, and the MYS 102 speak of certain indicators of 'Japa-siddhi'. They are as followsIf the initiated sees in dream a girl, an umbrella, a chariot, a lamp, a palace, a lotus flower, a river, an elephant, a ram, a garland, a sea, a flowering tree, a mountain, a horse, sacred flesh, wine, spirituous liquor then the initiated mantra is successful for the sadhaka. The Brihattantra-sara adds a celestial mango and a bull to the list. The Sri-vidyarnava-tantra adds the following - the union with a group of girls, the sight of a king, elephants and beautiful woman singing and dancing. The Sri-vidyarnava-tantra also speaks of the censurable dreams which are as follows, soldiers who are dark in complexion, who are oiled and strike, the union with another mans wife, the destruction of a country due to fire and wind, and the destruction of ones relatives. The Jayakhya Samhita, a Pancaratra work, says that various obstacles and disturbances appear before the sadhaka for three years. 99 Malati Madhava C.24, V.77, P.759 100 Sri-vidyarnava-tantra C. 16, P.415 101 Brihattantra-sara C.1, P.38 102 MYS 10.7 b- 9.
chapter 1. Introduction 49 If the sadhaka is undeterred and firm then from the fourth year onwards, he is served upon by disciples who surrender everything of = 1 that they own. After seven years he is waited by mighty kings who are desirous of his favour and grace. After nine years of constant and of continuous repetition, he experiences wonderful and delightful things such as a sound dream, hears sweet music, smells sweet and pleasant fragrance, and loud vedic recitation. In such a state the sadhaka eats and sleeps a little. When such a state is attained it should then be perceived that the sadhaka has attained the state of mantra perfection 103.
