by Laxmi Maji | 2021 | 143,541 words

This page relates ‘Sarvaroga-bhaishajya hymns found in the study on diseases and remedies found in the Atharvaveda and Charaka-samhita. These texts deal with Ayurveda—the ancient Indian Science of life—which lays down the principles for keeping a sound health involving the use of herbs, roots and leaves. The Atharvaveda refers to one of the four Vedas (ancient Sanskrit texts encompassing all kinds of knowledge and science) containing many details on Ayurveda, which is here taken up for study.

The Sarvaroga-²ú³ó²¹¾±á¹£aÂá²â²¹ hymns

The Sarvaroga-²ú³ó²¹¾±á¹£aÂá²â²¹ [²õ²¹°ù±¹²¹°ù´Ç²µ²¹²ú³ó²¹¾±á¹£aÂáÂá²â²¹á¹ ] hymns, the panacea for all diseases–of the Atharvaveda are included in the so-called Amholiá¹…gÄá¸ ²µ²¹á¹‡a and the Ä€²â³Üá¹£y²¹ ²µ²¹á¹‡a. The healing rituals ascribed to them are quite general and mainly consist of sprinkling water and washing of the patient with water mixed with dregs of ghee[1], as well as leaves of KÄmpÄ«la[2] or °³Üṣṭ³ó²¹[3] or Yava[4]. After the bath Yava ³¾²¹á¹‡i or Varaṇa ³¾²¹á¹‡i is tied. The water dug up by the ants UpajÄ«kÄ and the earth from an ant-hill are used in this connection. One cannot differentiate between Ä€tharvaá¹ prayers for longevity (Ä€yurá¹£yÄṇi) and those for prosperity (Puṣṭikarma). In such cases, the °²¹³ÜÅ›¾±°ì²¹ ³§Å«³Ù°ù²¹ primarily proposes Āñjana³¾²¹á¹‡i[5], Åšaá¹…kha³¾²¹á¹‡i[6], Parṇa³¾²¹á¹‡i[7] which are all prescribed for a Brahmin youth on the occasion of his investiture.
