If, in a country, a river carries a large amount of mire, wood, grass, stones, dead fish and crocodiles, wine, honey, flesh, clarified butter, oil, milk or curds; it 88 prognosticates an attack by an enemy-king (71.14.1). If the river flows against its normal current (64.6.6; 70.32.16; 72.3.7), there will be the danger from weapons to the people, within eight months (71.14.2). If a well roars, collapses, 86. If waters become white, yellow or darkbrown in colour, they adversely affect the Brahmanas, the Ksatriyas, the Vaisyas and the sudras respectively (70.10.1-2). The following are the omens to be noted in respect of The fire which, when a fire enkindled for a sacrifice.90 churned out, burns equally in all directions, licking as it were with its tongues in the form of a continuous and lofty group of straight flames, which looks glossy and has the sound like that of a drum or of the wheels of a moving car, which thunders like a cloud, roars like a bull or lion, or trumpets like an elephant and which produces ashes white like pearls, 91 leads to success. The fire, which looks like a Kimsuka, Asoka or Kuranta flower, or like a red or blue lotus, or like lotus-fibres, durva or pollen, or like cow's milk, pearlnecklace, the Moon, the Sun in the spring, burnished gold, 92 lightning or Aruna, leads to success within seven nights (21.7.2). The fire, which, when an oblation is offered on it, 89. Kausika Sutra prescribes a rite to be performed when water appears at an unexpected place (93.28; 121) or when clarified butter, oil or honey are seen flowing (93.39; 132). 90. 617 93 flares up as if rising to accept the offering and which appears pleased and smiling as it were, leads to success. The fire, which gives out a pleasant smell like that of a 94 red or blue lotus, or like that of lotus-fibres, which has a broad base and middle part as well as bright ends (24.3.4, 5.2) and which burns in the direction of the enemy, leads to success (24.4-4). But the fire, which is dark in colour, not glossy and full of smoke and which has flames curving in the apradaksina manner, does not lead to agreeable results, (21.7. 95 5; 29.2.1). If it breathes forth and thunders as it were with sparks spreading round about, an expiation-rite becomes necessary. If the flames of the fire, as it were, embrace the earth and move in all directions, that fire forecasts evil to the sacrificer. It is stated that whenever any inauspicious sign is seen in respect of the fire, it foreshadows trouble to the sacrificer and hence a santi should be performed (29.2.2-3, 5). The other omens to be noted in respect of fire are as follows: When fire appears suddenly at a place where it is not expected, it is an evil omen (64.3.5). When a well, a 96 93. 618 tank, a lake or a mountain appears to be on fire 97 (71.12.5), when garments, flesh and waters appear bright and begin to 98 burn, when towers, mansions, houses, palaces and hills crack or burn (64.3.8-9; cf. Brhatsamhita by Varahamihira 46.20), and when beasts and birds appear ablaze, as it were (64.6.10), great evil is portended to the king and the country. 99
