This page relates ‘Definition and examples of Pravasatpatika� of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines� representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

Definition and Examples of the ʰٱ貹پ character of woman heroine:
वर्तमानप्रवासपतिका प्रवसत्पतिका �
vartamānapravāsapatikā pravasatpatikā |[1]
The heroine whose hero is leaving right now, on a jouney, is called a ʰٱ貹پ.
1 Example of ʰٱ貹پ

दिवसकरमयूखैर्बोध्यमानं प्रभात� वरयुवतिमुखाभ� पङ्क जं जृम्भनेऽद्� �
कुमुदमपि गतेऽस्तं लीयत� चन्द्रबिम्बे हसितमिववधूना� प्रोषितेषु प्रियेषु �divasakaramayūkhairbodhyamāna� prabhāte varayuvatimukhābha� paṅka ja� jṛmbhane'dya |
kumudamapi gate'sta� līyate candrabimbe hasitamivavadhūnā� proṣiteṣu priyeṣu ||[3]This is a description of a ⾱ in Śarad ṛtu:
Roused by the sunbeams at sunrise
the Pankaja reveals its face,
Radiant like a young maiden
when the light of the moon is fading.
the smile slips from the petals of the kumuda
like the flicker of the smile from the young wife's lips
when the loved one is going far away.[4]प्रहरविरतौ मध्य� वाह्नस्ततोऽप� परेण या किमु� सकले याते वाह्नि प्रि�! त्वमिहैष्यसि �
इत� दिनशतप्राप्य� देशं प्रियस्य यियासत� हरति गमनं बालालापै� सबाष्पगलज्जालै� �praharaviratau madhye vāhnastato'pi pareṇa yā kimuta sakale yāte vāhni priya! tvamihaiṣyasi |
iti dinaśataprāpya� deśa� priyasya yiyāsato harati gamana� bālālāpai� sabāṣpagalajjālai� ||[5]“Won’t you return today itslf� asking like this, the girl with faltering voice stopped the onset of his long journey.
मा गा इत्यपमंगलं व्रज पुनरस्नेहे� हीनं वचस्तिष्ठेति प्रभुत�, यथारूचिकुर� इत्येषाप्युदासीनत� �
नो जीवामो विना त्वयेत� वचनं सम्भाव्यते वा � वा तस्मात� शिक्षय ना� नः समुचित� वाक्यं त्वय� प्रस्थित� �mā gā ityapamaṃgala� vraja punarasnehena hīna� vacastiṣṭheti prabhutā, yathārūcikuru ityeṣāpyudāsīnatā |
no jīvāmo vinā tvayeti vacana� sambhāvyate vā na vā tasmāt śikṣaya nātha na� samucita� vākya� tvayi prasthite ||[6]If I say "don't go' it is inauspicious, if I say “go� it betrays lack of concern, if I say "stay' it may sound overbearing, “do what you deem fit� may show indifference, “I shall not live without you� may or may not sound correct. Therefore, my lord! Kindly teach me the appropriate words at the time of your departure.
2 Example of Svīyā ʰٱ貹پ
ऋत� यस्मिन्समायान्ति गृहं सर्व� प्रवासिन� �
तस्मिन� वसन्ते हन्ताय� विदेशं गन्तुमुद्यतः �ṛtau yasminsamāyānti gṛha� sarve pravāsina� |
tasmin vasante hantāya� videśa� gantumudyata� ||[7]
3 Example of Mugdhā ʰٱ貹پ
एतां नवागतवयोमणिशोभमानसौवर्णगात्रलतिकांकमलायताक्षीम् �
हित्वा सुधांशुवदनां कुसुमाकरेऽस्मिन् कस्मात्प्रयाति नन� निष्ठुरमस्� चेतः �etā� navāgatavayomaṇiśobhamānasauvarṇagātralatikāṃkamalāyatākṣīm |
hitvā sudhāṃśuvadanā� kusumākare'smin kasmātprayāti nanu niṣṭhuramasya ceta� ||[8]How will the young beautiful girl bear his merciless deed (of leaving her)?
4 Example of Madhyā ʰٱ貹پ
दधितिलकमधिललाट� बिभ्राणो गुरुकृतं दयित� �
अवगुण्ठनवसनान्तः सजलदृशालोकितस्सुदृशा �dadhitilakamadhilalāṭa� bibhrāṇo gurukṛta� dayita� |
avaguṇṭhanavasanānta� sajaladṛśālokitassudṛś� ||[9]As the elders were putting a mark on his forhead, she saw with tears from under her saree covering.
5 Example of Pragalbhā ʰٱ貹پ
आदृष्टिप्रसर� निरीक्ष्� निपतन्नेत्राम्बुधारा प्रियं दृङ्मार्गव्यवधानमागतमथ ज्ञात्वा पतन्ती क्षितौ �
आलीभिर्गतचेतन� नन� हृता शीतोपचारैरिय� संज्ञा� सङ्गमिता विलोक्� भवनं शून्यं पुनर्मूर्च्छित� �ādṛṣṭiprasara� nirīkṣya nipatannetrāmbudhārā priya� dṛṅmārgavyavadhānamāgatamatha jñātvā patantī kṣitau |
ālībhirgatacetanā nanu hṛtā śītopacārairiya� saṃjñā� saṅgamitā vilokya bhavana� śūnya� punarmūrcchitā ||[10]With teary eyes she advanced to see the lover and fell on the ground knowing the path has been separated. The friends try to cool her and when she noticed the empty house, she fainted again.
6 Example of Parakīyā ʰٱ貹پ
कान्तं यान्तमवेक्ष्� दूरविषयं कान्ता स्वय� रथ्यया स्वप्रासादगवाक्षवीक्षणपर� तन्वी सखीसंयुता �
निर्गच्छन्नन� कि� � दैवहतय� प्रेयान् हृतोऽय� गृहादित्थं साश्रुविलोचनाऽस्� सुमुखी पत्नी� मुहुर्निन्दत� �kānta� yāntamavekṣya dūraviṣaya� kāntā svayā rathyayā svaprāsādagavākṣavīkṣaṇapara� tanvī sakhīsaṃyutā |
nirgacchannanu ki� na daivahatayā preyān hṛto'ya� gṛhādittha� sāśruvilocanā'sya sumukhī patnī� muhurnindati ||[11]Seeing him prepare to leave for travel from her window, the ⾱ scolded the wife again as to why she did not prevent him from leaving; with eyes filled with tears.
7 Example of Sāmānyā ʰٱ貹پ
कान्� गच्छसि विदेशमन्वह� स्मर्तुमत्� हि निजाङ्गसङ्गतम् �
देहि भूषणमितीरितस्तया � प्रदाय निरगाद्गृहाद्वहि� �kānta gacchasi videśamanvaha� smartumatra hi nijāṅgasaṅgatam |
dehi bhūṣaṇamitīritastayā sa pradāya niragādgṛhādvahi� ||[12]
