the Satapatha-BrÄhmaṇa and the Gopatha-BÄhmaṇa have used the
epithet 'veda' for the purÄṇa. 20 The purÄṇa was regarded as the fifth
Veda. 21 The study of the PurÄṇas was held to be more important even
22 than the study of the Vedas, VedÄngas and the Upanisads.2 The PurÄṇas
became the Vedas of the laity and they were enjoined to be read and
listened to by all the four varṇas of the Hindu society. The śudras who
were forbidden to study the Vedas were compensated by allowing them
access to purÄṇa and the itihÄsa,³ respectively called also the purÄṇa
veda and the itihÄsa veda. 24

The PurÄṇas are unanimous in their view that VyÄsa made the
PurÄṇasaṃhitÄ 25 and instructed his pupil Lomahará¹£ana when he entrusted
the work of spreading it. This is considered to have been at a time when
the Vedas were divided into four. VedavyÄs who had the knowledge of the
PurÄṇas is said to have composed the PurÄṇasaṃhita based on the
ÄkhyÄna, upÄkhyÄna and gÄthÄ etc; while the ÄkhyÄna is the narration
about an incident which the speaker himself has witnessed, the
upÄkhyÄna is that which was heard from somebody and retold. GÄthÄs are
the metrical quotations found in Vedas and BrÄhmaṇas.

According to the definition of the grammarian PÄṇini² the word
purÄṇa is that which is existing from long time past (purÄbhavam). It
therefore appears that originally the term purÄṇa signified an ancient tale
