à½� 16 called purÄṇa because it lives in the past or it breathes ancient times.
(yasmÄt purÄ hyanatidaá¹� purÄṇaá¹� tena hi smá¹›tam). The Padma PurÄṇa¹
offers the following explanation (puraparÄṃparaá¹� vashti purÄṇaá¹�
tena tata smá¹›tam). The MP7 describes the purÄṇas as 'the records of
ancient events.' The BdP says that a purÄṇa describes what happened in
the past.
THE ORIGIN OF THE PURĀṆAS
The purÄṇa as a branch of learning or vidyÄ has been mentioned as
18 originated from BrahmÄ, even before the Vedas issued forth from his
mouths. In fact, even the extant PurÄṇas preserve in them certain
ancient traditions that have their roots in the pre-vedic times. Then again,
the Vedas were not accessible to the general masses of the Indian society
on account of the unique sanctity attached to them. But such was not the
case with the PurÄṇas, which were meant not only for the learned scholars
of the upper class of Indian society, but also for the common man, for
whom they were specially composed, and then redacted several times in
order to make them up-to-date according to the society, so that they may
serve as the permanent religious and cultural guides for the society in
general.
On account of the divine origin ascribed to the PurÄṇas as
mentioned above, 19 the PurÄṇas came to acquire the status of the Veda.
Even in the BrÄhmaṇas the status of the PurÄṇas was recognised. Both
