Brihad Bhagavatamrita (commentary)

The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.1.163, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 2.1.163 contained in Chapter 1—Vairagya (renunciation)—of Part two (prathama-khanda).

अह� तत� क्षेत्�-माहात्म्यं गर्दभोऽप� चतुर�-भुजः �
यत्र प्रवेश-मात्रे� � कस्याप� पुनर�-भव� � १६� �

aho tat ṣeٰ-māhātmya� gardabho'pi catur-bhuja� |
yatra ś-ٰṇa na kasyāpi punar-bhava� || 163 ||

aho–o!; ٲ-ṣeٰ–of that holy place; ٳⲹ–gǰ; 岹�–a donkey; api–e; ٳ�-Ჹ�–four armed; yatra–t; ś-ٰṇa–simply by entering; na–ndz; kasya api–of anyone; puna� bhava�–rٳ.

(Those ܲ continued) “Ah! How can we possibly describe the glories of ʳܰṣoٳٲ-ṣeٰ? Even a donkey entering that abode attains a four-armed form, and anyone who enters that region never has to take birth again.�

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

The ܲ say, “What to speak of the glories of Śrī Բٳ-deva’s -岹, even the glories of His abode, ʳܰṣoٳٲ-ṣeٰ, are magnificent.� To communicate this, they exclaim in amazement, �Aho!� saying, “Even if a base animal like a donkey enters that sacred area, it attains a four-armed form similar to the Supreme Lord.�

In Brahma ʳܰṇa, Śrī states:

अह� क्षेत्रस्य माहात्म्यं समन्ताद् दश योजनम्
दिवि-ष्ठा यत्र पश्यन्ति सर्वान� एव चतुर�-भुजान्

aho ṣeٰsya māhātmya� samantād daśa yojanam
divi-ṣṭhā yatra paśyanti sarvān eva catur-bhujān

Aho! How wonderful are the glories of ʳܰṣoٳٲ-ṣeٰ! The demigods see that all the living beings residing within its area, which spans ten yojanas (eighty miles), possess fourarmed forms.

Śrī Vedavyāsa states in Ҳḍa ʳܰṇa:

यत्र स्थिता जनाः सर्व� शङ्ख-चक्राब्ज-पाणय�
दृश्यन्त� दिवि देवांश� � मोहयन्ति मुहुर् मुहु�

yatra sthitā janā� sarve śaṅkha-cakrābja-pāṇaya�
dṛśyante divi devāṃ� ca mohayanti muhur muhu�

All the residents of this land hold conchshell, club, disc, and lotus in their hands. Seeing them, even the demigods are repeatedly bewildered.

In the ṛc-貹śṣṭ, Śrī states:

चतुर�-भुजा जनाः सर्व� दृश्यन्त� यन�-निवासिनः

catur-bhujā janā� sarve dṛśyante yan-nivāsina�

All living beings in that abode are seen to be four-armed.

Immediately upon entering that abode, any living being coming from any other place becomes free from the cycle of birth and death. In the same ṛc-貹śṣṭ, Śrī Vedavyāsa states:

स्पर्शनाद् एव तत�-क्षेत्रं नृणा� मुक्ति-प्रदायकम� यत्र साक्षात् पर� ब्रह्म भाति दारव-लीलय�
अप� जन्म-शतैः साग्रैर् दुरिताचा�-तत�-पर� क्षेत्रे’स्मिन� सङ्ग-मात्रे� जायत� विष्णुना समम्

sparśanād eva ٲ-ṣeٰ� nṛṇā� mukti-pradāyakam yatra sākṣāt para� brahma bhāti dārava-līlayā
api janma-śatai� sāgrair duritācāra-tat-para� kṣetre’smin saṅga-mātreṇa jāyate viṣṇunā samam

Parabrahman, the Supreme Absolute Truth, is personally present in Śrī ʳܰṣoٳٲ-ṣeٰ, performing His pastime of being a wooden Deity. Just by touching this abode, all living entities are instantly liberated and never again have to undergo rebirth. Even those who have committed heinous acts over hundreds of lifetimes become as venerated as Śrī վṣṇ if they merely touch ʳܰṣoٳٲ-ṣeٰ.
