Ṣpha (ष्�).—Feminine affix आयनी (ⲹī), termed also तद्वित (tadvita) (l) added, according to the Eastern school of grammarians, to words ending with the tad. affix यञ� (ⲹñ) (prescribed by rules like गर्गादिभ्य� यञ� (gargādibhyo ⲹñ) IV.1.105) e. g. गार्ग्यायणी, वात्स्यायनी (ⲹṇ�, vātsyⲹī) as contrasted with गांर्गी (Ṽ۲ī) or वात्सी (ٲī) according to the Western school of Panini; (2) added to form feminine bases of the words from लोहि� (lohita) to कत (kata) to which यञ� (ⲹñ) has already been added as also to the words कौरव्य (kauravya) and माण्डू� (ṇḍū첹). e. g. लौहित्यायनी, बाभ्रव्यायणी, कात्यायनी, कौरव्य�-यणी, माण्डूकायनी (lauhityⲹī, ⲹṇ�, kātyⲹī, 첹ܰ-ⲹṇ�, māṇḍūkⲹī) cf.
