Pratibandha (啶ぞ啶︵が啶ㄠ啶�) refers to a variety of 补诲丑颈峁ａ弓丑腻苍补, which is a pedestal or base of a structure, and a very important component in the art of construction (艣颈濒辫补). Pratibandha is mentioned in the K膩艣yapa艣颈濒辫补 as having a further 10 sub-varieties. It is also mentioned in the P膩dmasa峁僪ita.

Shilpashastra (啶多た啶侧啶ざ啶距じ啷嵿い啷嵿ぐ, 艣颈濒辫补艣膩stra) represents the ancient Indian science (shastra) of creative arts (shilpa) such as sculpture, iconography and painting. Closely related to Vastushastra (architecture), they often share the same literature.

Pratibandha (啶啶班い啶苦が啶ㄠ啶�).鈥擜 type of 补诲丑颈峁ａ弓丑腻苍补 (鈥榩edestal鈥�);鈥擬ayamata (verse 14.36) and K膩艣yapa艣颈濒辫补 (verses 6.30-32) mention pratibandha-补诲丑颈峁ａ弓丑腻苍补. Mayamata states 鈥渨hen the 辫谤补迟颈惫腻箩补苍补 takes four parts and prati takes three parts then the base is called pratibandha, all the other members being same as in the kapotabandha-补诲丑颈峁ａ弓丑腻苍补. That means to say the prati moulding which used to be the thinnest moulding in all the plinths becomes prominent and thick in this plinth. K膩艣yapa艣颈濒辫补 (verse 6.26) states that pratibandha should possess 惫峁泃迟补办耻尘耻诲补.

However, 莫艣膩na艣ivagurudeva Paddati gives a different picture of the nature of pratibandha-补诲丑颈峁ａ弓丑腻苍补. According to this, 鈥渢he upper part of the prati should be broad (pratimukha). On this, makara, 尘峁沢补, 惫测腻濒补 and gaja should be carved鈥�. No mention of kapota is seen in 莫艣膩na艣ivagurudeva for the pratibandha-补诲丑颈峁ａ弓丑腻苍补 .

Pratibandha (啶啶班い啶苦が啶ㄠ啶�) or Pratibandhaka refers to a 鈥渂lockade鈥� (in a hole of a bowl).鈥�(Cf. Astronomical instruments in Bh膩skar膩c膩rya鈥檚 Siddh膩nta艣iroma峁噄).鈥擜ccording to Mun墨艣vara (1603 A.D.) in his Mar墨ci commentary on Bh膩skara II: 鈥淭he bowl should be so made that it has a large hole (辫峁泃丑耻-肠丑颈诲谤补 = 尘补丑腻谤补苍诲丑谤补) at the bottom. Through this statement it is indicated that the hole should be made in such a manner that, when the bowl is placed on the water of the basin and when water enters [the bowl], the hole is not blocked [i.e., pratibandhaka] by any dirt that may be in the water of the basin. Because of the possibiliy of a small hole [i.e., tat-pratibandha-sambhava] getting blocked by dirt an the like, assuming here a coalescene of the vowel a (补办腻谤补-辫谤补艣濒别峁) [by reading 补辫峁泃丑耻] is not proper鈥�.
