: academia.edu: A Prayer for Rebirth in the Sukhāvatīṣaṇaśٰ (लक्षणशास्त्र).—This śٰ or system of knowledge became known as “the śٰ belonging to Samudra� (sāmudrikaśٰ), from which “the śٰ of the lines� (lekhāśٰ), or palmistry eventually derived, although in the beginning the two were combined. The earliest remnants of the system indicate that there was a conscious employment of numbers in connection with part of the body probably as a mnemonic device used in learning the human anatomy.
