The Purana (啶啶班ぞ啶�, pur膩峁嘺s) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India鈥檚 vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.

Accordingly, 鈥�... there once lived in a town called Devakamalapura, belonging to the King Kamalavarman, an excellent Br膩hman named Candrasv膩min. And that wise man had a wife [named Devamati] like himself, distinguished for modesty, and she was a worthy match for Sarasvat墨 and Lak峁墨鈥�.
The story of Devamati and Candrasv膩min was narrated by Marubh奴ti in order to entertain the company of prince Narav膩hanadatta.
The Kath膩sarits膩gara (鈥榦cean of streams of story鈥�), mentioning Devamati, is a famous Sanskrit epic story revolving around prince Narav膩hanadatta and his quest to become the emperor of the 惫颈诲测腻诲丑补谤补蝉 (celestial beings). The work is said to have been an adaptation of Gu峁嚹佱笉hya鈥檚 B峁沨atkath膩 consisting of 100,000 verses, which in turn is part of a larger work containing 700,000 verses.

Sanskrit, also spelled 啶膏啶膏啶曕啶むぎ啷� (蝉补峁僺办峁泃补尘), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
