Āⲹ (आवेध्य) refers to “that to be fixed by piercing the limbs� and represents a classification of ornaments (󲹰ṇa), according to Nāṭyaśāstra chapter 23. Ābharaṇa represents one of the four types of ṃk, or “decorations�, which in turn is a category of nepathya, or “costumes and make-up�, the perfection of which forms the main concern of the Āhāryābhinaya, or “extraneous representation�, a critical component for a successful dramatic play.

According to the Nāṭyaśāstra, “the ornaments to be fixed by piercing the limbs (屹ⲹ) are ear-ornaments such as ear-rings (ṇḍ)�.

Āⲹ (आवेध्य) refers to “pierced ornaments� and represents one of the four-fold classification of Āⲹ, according to the Saṅgītanārāyaṇa (Vol. II, p.482) and the Saṅgītārṇavacandrika (1995: p.219). Puruṣottama Miśrā first makes a general classification of ornaments () into�屹ⲹ (pierced), Ի󲹲īⲹ (fastened), ṣeⲹ (worn) and ropita (set).
