This page relates ‘Research Methodology of the study of the Philosophy of language in the Five Nikayas, from the perspective of linguistics. The Five Nikayas, in Theravada Buddhism, refers to the five books of the Sutta Pitaka (“Basket of Sutra), which itself is the second division of the Pali Tipitaka of the Buddhist Canon (literature).
6. Research Methodology
The methodology to be used has vastly involved a critical examination of the text for some important issues of philosophy of language against the theoretical background to be built on the review of extensive literature consisting both primary and secondary sources. The research work has mostly followed the scientific method with a focus on (i) Inquiry of facts, and (ii) Reexamination (Re-open) of facts with regards to philosophy of language on linguistics perspective.
An attempt has been made to maintain logically unity, mutual dependent, and community all through the course of this research work. Interpretations and inferences on philosophy of language have primarily been drawn from the text and theoretically supported in light of other viable discussions. It is further expected that findings based on these discussions would enable us to postulate and draw some conclusions and would present the same in this research work.
