12. Meanings, Definitions and Interpretations of 岵

can be seen as stated:�

(a) To give up, abandoning, giving up, renunciation,
(b) Liberality, generosity, munificence (n.) generous, munificent (adj.) in the -English Dictionary by Rhys David.

Sīlasampanno saddho purisapuggalo sabbbe maccharino loke cāgena atirocati

Meant that “He who is virtuous and religious excels all stingy people in generosity.�[1]

can be frequently seen as combined with �Mutta: liberal�, munificent (ܳٳٲ岵), �ʲ屹ٲ-citta�: a heart bent on giving�. In this sense forms one of the noble treasures of a man, viz, �, ī, suta, and 貹ññ; faith, virtue, right knowledge, liberality and wisdom.� It can be compared with the Catholic treasure of grace.[2]

Sometimes, is stated as �岵ṭṭԲ� combining with the suffix word �ṭṭԲ� meant ‘the resolution of generosity�, as �岵Գܲپ� combining with �anussati� meant �recollection of liberality or generosity�,[3] as �岵첹ٳ� with �첹ٳ� meant ‘talk about munificence�,[4] as �岵-dhaāna� with �Բ� meant ‘the treasure of the good gift, as one of the seven riches or blessings, the ⲹ󲹲Ծ, viz. Sadhā, Sīla, Hiri, Ottappa, Suta, , ʲññ as one of five; , Sīla, Suta, 岵, ʲññ,[5] as �岵-貹� with �� meant ‘the blessing of or with the virtue of munificence.[6]

: Liberality, is one of blessings (岵-貹), foundations (岵-徱ṭṭԲ), recollections (岵-Գܲپ), treasures (岵-dhana).

can be noted that it is similar to Բ according to the definition of the sub-commentary of ٳ屹 ḷi.

岵–t cajati etenā-ti cāgo, Բ�

Meaning that � is called Բ because it has the same nature of giving up, and generosity.�[7]

In the sub-commentary (վ) of PāThikavagga ḷi, it is defined that�

Dīyati etenāti Բ�, paric岵-ٲ. Deyyadhammassa 貹ⲹٳٲ� 첹ٱ pariccajavasena Բ�.�[8]

It means that “The giving up accompanied by volition (paric岵ٲ) is called Բ. Բ is capable of giving up the offerings (almsfood and drinking juice, etc.).

In other words, the capability of giving up materials is called Բ. It can be considered that Բ and have the same nature and they are synonyms of charity or generosity–renouncing and receptive charity.

In addition, it is evident that is included in Բ by the definition mentioned in the commentary of Nettipakarṇa ḷi,�

Cāgo, pariccago, dhamma-Բ�, -Բ�, abhaya-Բ�, ṭṭ-dānāni vitthāretabbāni�,[9]

Meant that � (generosity or renunciation), paric岵 (great renunciation), 󲹳-Բ (donation of dhamma), 峾-Բ (donation of material), 󲹲ⲹ-Բ (donation of sanctuary), etc., should be known as Բ in elaboration.

It is obvious that there is a relation between and Բ according to the commentary of Majjhimapaṇṇāsa ḷi.

The commentary describes that�

Etāya saddhāya dadahi Բ�[10]

Meaning that �Բ can be done through .�

On the contrary, it means that one is not capable of doing Բ without .

Thus, and Բ are inter-connected with one another. If we say about , Բ is also included in it and similarly is mutually included in Բ. It is, here, worthy of noting that the word �Բ� is usually used in the public instead of although there is the usage of in the literature. So, the word �Բ� is used in this chapter instead of ��.
