This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

44 ( 6 ) DAILY ROUTINE OF KINGS AND PRINCES :
A few details regarding the daily routine of the
king can be gathered from the stray references in the TM.
In the morning the king awoke, and left his bed, on hear-
ing the morning verses sung by the bard and, accompanied
by a pack of soldiers, went outside the city pricincts
for a walk in the course of which he visited the gardens,
the lakes and the temples.45 Then he took bath and perform-
ed his daily worship in the palace temple; the saints,
