This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

feudatories sat in rows at a short distance. The crown pri-
nce used to sit near the feet of the emperor on the pave-
ment of the assembly-hall. The queen also sat with the em-

peror on the same golden throne.
It was normally necessary to be properly bathed and
well-dressed before appearing in the royal presence in the
59 court. The arrivals in the court were duly announced to
the king and only after the permission of the king was the
60 person concerned ushered in and granted the royal audience.
Before announcing the arrivals, the door-maid would bow
down by resting her hands and knees on the ground. 61 At the
arrival of the queen the staff-bearer maid (Vetradh膩r墨)
used to ward the people off with loud shouts in order to
clear the path, and Cara峁嘺 women served as forerunners utte-
ring 'Jaya Jaya' exclamations.
62 All dignitaries right from the king to the commander-
-in-chief were to be saluted by servants and youngsters by
bowing down in such a way as to touch all the limbs to the
ground, 63
