2. Meditation in Early ձ貹Գٳ Practice (Introduction)

Early ձ貹Գٳ meditative practices have not been investigated in detail to date. Nothing has been written about the transmitted details of , holding breath meditation and of Āⲹ 󾱰ṣu’s and Muni Hemarāja’s meditative practices, though some work has been done on the practices of Jayācārya’s meditation. The primary sources are the writings of Jayācārya. There is little evidence of meditative practices relating to Āⲹ 󾱰ṣu, recorded in Bhikkhu Jasa 鲹ⲹṇa by Jayācārya (1851).

Բ첹[1], the head nun of the ձ貹Գٳ sect, translated into ᾱԻī Jayācārya’s two meditational treatises, ṭ�Բ and ḍ�Բ, originally composed in Ჹٳī and published in the book, Ā󲹲 (Jayācārya, 1997: 81�97). She also translated a small poetic piece on meditational procedures, entitled ٳԲ-vidhi. However, these three texts have not been analysed so far. A composition in Ჹٳī of Karmacanda-jī Savāmī kā ٳԲ by Muni Karmacanda, a summary of Jayācārya’s ḍ�-Բ, is available. It does not depict an independent form of meditation but a summarised form of the one found in ḍ�-Բ (Navaratnamala, 2003b: 231). Buddhamala (1991), an eminent scholar and historian of the ձ貹Գٳ tradition, has also contributed to the subject, but only by way of brief commentary.

Բ첹 (b. 1941) is the ninth head of nuns (ī ܰ) of the Ś峾 ձ貹Գٳ order. She is designated a title of Great-Nun (-śṇ�). She is also an editor of more than 75 books written by Āⲹ ճܱī, and has also edited his “autobiography� from his diaries into twenty-five volumes. She has authored five volumes of ճܱī’s foot journeys. Sargama, a collection of Hindi poems was also released by her. Many Jaina were translated by her from Ჹٳī into the ᾱԻī language. In addition, twelve volumes of 󲹲ī ḍa composed by Jayācārya in Rajasthānī were translated and edited by her (ճܱī, 2014: 320-23, 327-29).
