Essay name: Paumacariya (critical study)

This is a critical study of the Paumacariya: the earliest Jain version of Rama's life story, written in Prakrit by Vimalasuri dating to the 4th century AD. In this text, Rama (referred to as Padma) is depicted with lotus-like eyes and a blooming face. The Paumacariya places emphasis on the human aspects of characters rooted in Jain values, contrasting with the divine portrayal in Valmiki鈥檚 version.

offered five girls to Lak峁a峁嘺 in marriage (PCV-PCR-Samudra only
offered four girls). (29) R膩ma challenged R膩vana through Angada
before the commencement of the battle. (30) Here Trijat膩 and
Lank膩sundar墨 spoke for S墨t膩's purity after the battle between R膩ma
and his sons. They further asked R膩ma to arrange an ordeal if he
was not convinced with Sita's chastity. (PCV-PCR-R膩ma asks
S墨t膩 to adduce proof, then S墨t膩 offers for fire-ordeal.

(31) Kaikeyi is jealous at the proposed Rama's coronation,
Bharata abuses Dasaratha, Lak峁a峁嘺 becomes furious and is ready to
imprison Bharata. (32) Bharata. goes to call back Rama of his own
accord. Kaikeyi follows him but does not speak. She is here also
jealous at heart, (33) Rudrabh奴ti commissions his warriors to snatch
away S墨t膩, but after having learnt that R膩ma is a Baladeva, he
surrenders to R膩ma. (34) Candranakh膩 assumed her hideous form
and Lak峁a峁嘺 raised his sword to threaten her men if they dared to
put him in danger.

(35) The origin of the Ik峁膩ku and the Hari Vamsas as well as the
genealogical lists of Ik峁膩ku, Vidy膩dhara and Hari Vamsas are dropped.
Abridgement:-
(36) The genealogical list of V膩nara Va峁兣沘 is curtailed (37) The
genealogical list of R膩k峁sa Vamsa seems to be influenced by the PCV
(See Supra Ch. 5).
