This page describes subdivisions of the fivefold vow (vrata) which is verse 7.2 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 2 of the chapter The Five Vows and includes an extensive commentary.

诲别艣补蝉补谤惫补迟辞'峁嘘尘补丑补迟墨 || 7.2 ||
The vow is of two kinds, minor-vow (补峁嘘惫谤补迟补) and great-vow (尘补丑腻惫谤补迟补), from the abstinence (virati) being partial or complete. (2)

Anvayartha: vrata ke do bheda haim-[deshatah anuh] uparokta himsadi papom ka ekadesha tyaga karana so anuvrata aura [sarvatah mahati] sarvadesha tyaga karana so mahavrata hai |

The subdivisions of the fivefold vow (vrata) are now given.
The word 鈥�诲别艣补鈥� refers to partial. The word 鈥�sarva鈥� refers to complete. Desisting or abstinence (virati) is supplied from the previous 蝉奴迟谤补. These are taken respectively. Partial abstinence is a minor-vow (补峁嘘惫谤补迟补), and complete abstinence is a great-vow (尘补丑腻惫谤补迟补). Each vow is of these two kinds. The practise of these vows with vigilance dispels suffering, just as an excellent medicine cures disease.
