Rivers in Ancient India (study)

This page relates ‘Descriptions of the rivers in the Jambudvipa� of the study on the rivers in ancient India as reflected in the Vedic and Puranic texts. 11. Descriptions of the rivers in the ܻ屹ī貹

The entire earth is surrounded by the rivers and Mountains from all directions. There are ū, ʲṣa, Śī, ś, ñ, Ś첹 and Puṣkarathe seven continents on this earth. ܻ屹ī貹 is as much as one lakh yojana long and ʲṣa etc., other continents are proportionately larger in an orderly manner. These 屹ī貹 are surrounded by the oceans known as ṇa, (alkaline water) ṣu, (sugarcane juice) ܰ(wine), ҳṛt (ghee), Dadhi(curd), Dugdha (milk) and Suddhodaka (sweet water) more than double as compared to the Dvīpas. Priyāvrata, the son of Manu, was the king of these seven 屹ī貹.[1] This ܻ屹ī貹 consisting of nine segments is surrounded by holy Mountains and rivers. There are seven Kulaparvatas and seven rivers in India. The seven Kulaparvaras are�Ի, Malaya, Śܰپ, and Yamūka, Sahya, Vindhya and ٰ. The seven rivers here are�, ܰ, Ṛṣܱ, īٳī, ṛṣṇāvṇ�, 䲹Ի岵 and 峾貹ṇ�. The six rivers, i.e. Ҳṅg, ۲ܲ, Ҵǻ屹ī, ճṅg󲹻, 屹ī and Sarayu are capable of sweeping the evils.[2] This beautiful ܻ屹ī貹 is famous for Jambu (ܲ fruit) and it is as lengthy as one lakh yojana. This ٲṣa is the best place in this continent.[3] The same description of ܻ屹ī貹 is found in the ṅgܰṇa, Ծܰṇa, ܱܰṇa, Ѳٲⲹܰṇa, Ѳ첹ṇḍⲹܰṇa and վṣṇܱܰṇa also.232

Besides these rivers, there are some important rivers mentioned in the different ʳܰṇa. These are�ṇo, Alakānandā, Ṛṣikūlyā, ṛṣṇ�, śī, Ҳṇḍī, վٲ, 䲹Բī, Carmanvati, ŚDzԲ, ٲī, ṣo, ձ岹ṛt, ѲԻ쾱ī, ѲԲī, Payasinī, īٳī, ղṭo岹, ղⲹī, ʲṣṇī, ճṅg󲹻, Tāmraparī, Candrarasā, śī, ṛt etc. 屹ī, ٱ𱹾, ܳū, վś, ٳūٲ, ܻ, ձٰī, ṛtī, ձṇ�, Ѳī, Sānīrā, Ś, 侱ٰūṭ�, ǻ, Kramu, Ҳṇḍī, ṣu, chandrabhāgādyā, etc. These names of rivers are found in the Ҳḍaܰṇa also.[4] If someone takes bath in these rivers, one is immediately released from the bondage of karmas. Taking bath in these holy rivers is equaled to visiting many holy places.
