Dark Night

D. V. Krishna Sastri (Translated from Telugu by D. Anjaneyulu)

D. V. KRISHNA SASTRI

Call me not home!
Nor ask me in
Call me not home
a lonely traveller by night
along four street.
Call me not home!

Playing an unknown song
on a modest lute,
Picking up some dreams
all along the path,
Call me not home!

With the door ajar, why nod your head
As if to beckon me in?
Shower not your affection unbearable
To hold me up!
I can’t stand, for I must sing
The morning song before the Lord,
At the break of dawn
that follows the dark night.
Call me not home!
