223 Chitragupta-katha. Origin and history of the Kayasthas. Chitragupta was born out of the entire body (kaya) of Brahma, and hence the name Kayastha. This personage had nine sons, namely, Gauda, Mathura, Bhatta, Nagara, Sena, Adhishthana, Srivastavya, Ambashtha, and Karana, and these represent the nine septs of the Kayastha clan. At the end there is an account of an annual fast in honor of Chitragupta. The work professes to be an episode of the Uttarakhanda of the Padma Purana.
