32. Vyavaharamanjari, an unknown work of Bhojaraja on Dharmashastra
Prof. P. V. Kane' makes the following remarks about the composition of works on Dharmasastra by Dharesvara Bhojadeva :- " - "That he (Bhojadeva) composed an extensive work on the principal subjects of Dharmasastra follows from numerous references to him contained in the Mitaksara, the Dayabhaga, the Haralata and other works,..... Whether Bhoja composed on Dharmasastra one work or two (as he composed two on poetics) and whether his work was a commentary or an independent digest it is difficult to say.' Aufrecht 2 ascribes two works on Dharmasastra to Bhoja viz. (1) Carucarya and (2) Vyavahara-Samuccaya. Regarding the Vyavahara-Samuccaya he makes the following entry3:- - "Quoted by Raghunandana, Oxf. 292 a, by Kamalakara, Oxf. 279 b." Prof. Kane mentions a work called Vyavahara-Samuccaya in the following entry in his list of works on Dharmasastra :- "vyavaharasamuccaya m. in devapratisthatatva by raghunamdana and in nirnayasindhu " In his list of authors on Dharmasastra we have the following entry re. Bhojadeva:- " bhojadeva Sec. 64 ; a. of bhupalapaddhati, bhupalasamuccaya, or bhupalakrtyasamu- ccaya, bhujabalabhima, carucarya, yuktikalpataru, rajaniti, rajamartanda, sivatatva- prakasika . " ,,, I Mimamsa Prakasa (Poona ), Vol. I, pp. 10-11. 1. History of Dharmasastra, Vol. I, p. 277. 2. Catalogus Catalogorum, Part I, p. 418. 3. Ibid, p. 617. 4. History of Dharmasastra, Vol. I, p. 631. 5. Ibid, p. 719. 212
In none of the references recorded above we find any mention of a work called vyavaharamamjari ascribed to bhojaraja and referred to by a commentator of the Mahabharata viz. Vimalabodha,' whose commentary variously known as Durghatarthaprakasini or Visama Sloki or Durbodhapadabhanjini has been preserved in the Govt. Mss Library at the B. O. R. Institute, Poona. This Ms is No. 84 of 1869-70. As this commentary is yet unpublished I reproduce the reference to vyavaharamamjari from this Ms from Folio 63 b :- " evam nanarupe vyavaharapurusa iti ayam ca sardhasloko bhojarajena vyavahara- mamjaryamanyatha vyakhyatah | ubhayoh satyanrtapravrttayorvadiprativadinorviruddho vyavaharah | sa cobhayadharmagrahitatvat | ubhayatma purusah ko'pi nilotpaladalasyamah sitasitatma satyanrtapravrttatvat | ubhayoscatasro damstra yasmin sa tatha | evamubhayoscatvarah padah | bhasottarakriyapratyakalitapadacatustayasahita astau padah yasmin sa tatha | naikani bahuni ubhayornayanani yasmin sa tatha | caturaksarakhat | vyavaharasya | " The above reference to as the author of a work on Dharmasastra called vyavaharamamjari in a Ms 2 of Vimalabodha's commentary appears to be very important as no Mss of this work have been recorded so far in the Mss catalogues. The other work of Bhojaraja on mentioned by Aufrecht and Prof. Kane viz. 1. Annals of the Bhandarkar Institute (Sukthankar: Epic Studies) Vol. XVII, p. 194, Arjunamisra mentions Vimalabodha, who cites Devabodha, hence we get the Series devabodha-vimalabodha- arjunamisra, Vimalabodha mentions Vaisampayana's tika and cites Devabodha ( once as Svamin ). 2. The colophon of the B. O. R. I. Ms reads as under :- 66 iti sri visamasloki tika samapta || " idam pustakam suddham durmilam prati jnatva atyamta- suddhapratyanusarenaiva sivanekaropanamna sivaramapamtasununa krsnabhattena punyakhyapurabhedena sthitena svartham parartham ca likhitam | lekhanakale vicarasakyatvat prateratyamtasuddhatvacca | srimadbharata- vyakhyanapritimatah pratyamtara sampadanasaktasya purusasya cittaikagryena drdhamananasilasya kvacikkaci- damse'thapi bhavisyatyupakarakamiti || || sake 1724 dumdubhisamvatsare magha krsnastamyam saha navamyam bhaumavasare rajanyah prathamayamavasane jagadambakrpaya siddhim gatamidam pustakam subham bhuyat || " This copy was written at Poona in A. D. 1802 by a scribe Krsnambhat Sivaram Sivanekar who complains in the the above colophon that he had to rely for his copying work on an incorrect original perhaps owing to the rarity of good Mss of this work.
the is known only by references to it in other works on Dharmasastra and hence it is difficult to decide whether these two works by Bhojaraja on vyavahara viz. (1) vyavaharamamjari mentioned by Vimalabodha and (2) mentioned by Raghunandana are identical or otherwise. For the present we have no other course left open but to treat them as two separate works of Bhojaraja and await further research on the question from the students of the history of Dharmasastra literature.
