This is an English study of the Vishnu-Smriti: an ancient Sanskrit Sutra dealing with the rules of various traditions and customs such as Dharmashastra, Caste, Monarchy, Law, Penances and Asceticism. The Vishnu-smriti in one hundred chapters is presented in the form of a dialogue between Vishnu and Prithvi (the goddess Earth).

The verses in chapters XXIX, XXX and XLVIII are
composed in Anustubh or sloka metre and vedic Tri峁ubh
metre. The verses 9, and 10 of chapter XXIX, verse 47 of
Chapter XXX, verse 6 of chapter XLVIII are in Vedic Tri峁�-
峁璾bh metre. The verses in the chapter LVI are in Upendra-
vajr膩 while the verses in the chapter XCIX are in Indravajra,
Upendravajra and in Vasantatilaka metres. The vasantatilaka
is a variety of the vedic 艣akvari metre. The vedic akvari
metre consists of 56 syllables divided into four quarters
and each quarter has fourteen syllables. The Vasantatilaka
metre of classical Sanskrit also consists of four quarters
in a verse and each quarter has fourteen syllables. The
