The meaning of Allegory
The word Allegory is derived from Latin word Allegoria which is borrowed from a Greek word. "Allo" means "something else", and Agoreuein means "to speak". It tends to say that an allegory of a story, poem, picture is that in which the characters and events are symbols of something else. Allegories usually point to some moral, religious or political aspect. It is a story, or description, wherein the ideas such as patience, purity and truth are symbolised by persons who are characters in the story. Thus, it refers to a form of art that conceals another meaning apart from the ordinary meaning. Hence, it may be said that an allegory is another type of matephor used. 7 4. natakam saprakaranamanko vyayoga eva ca | bhanah samavakarasca vithi prahasanam dimah | ihamrgasca vijneyo dasamo natyalaksane | 5. 6. 7.
