2(f): Epithets relating to Rudra’s auspicious character
Rudra’s auspicious character is revealed by a number of epithets. Such as Mayaskara, Mayobhava, Śṃb, Śṅk, Ś, Śtara,[1] īḍhṣṭ,[2] īḍhṣa,[3] īḍh,[4] Śtama.[5]
Ѳī derives the term śṅk and mayaskara respectively as:
And:
mayo ǰṣaܰ� karoti mayaskara�.[6]
It means Rudra bestows loukikasukha (earthly happiness) and ǰṣaܰ (salvation).
The term ś implies auspicious and sinless�
In this context, ṭa remarks that�
From his (ṭa’s) commentary it can be understood that he has a capacity of sprinkling rain or water and he is youthful. He is also known as Ś and ѲDzū.[9]
According to Sāyaṇācārya,
sa� ܰ� bhāvayatyutpādayatīti vā śambhu� | ⲹ� ܰ� bhāvayatīti mayobhū.[10]
It means one who bestows or generates happiness is called Ś and ѲDzū. He is extolled as Prathamo Daivyo ṣa or the first divine physician[11] and or one who protects the whole world.[12]
