This is an English study of the Nighantu and its commentary called the Nirukta by Yaska. The Nighantu is an ancient Sanskrit lexicon dealing with the words of the Vedic language. This essay presents a detailed analysis of the extant five chapters of this text and examines it's authorship, tracing meanings of words through Vedic texts by providing a comparative study involving Sayana's interpretations and connections with other texts like Amarakosa.

' 325 14. Indriya: The word occurs in forty one places, with
its forms. In three places it is used in the sense assigned
(i.e. I.111.2; V.31.3; I.107.2). In rest of the places it
is explained as bala or virya mainly of the god Indra.
15. Vasu: The word with its forms (i.e. vasuna, vasunam;
Vasubhi�, vasuni and vason) occurs in two hundred and ninety
two places. In all the places it is used in the sense assigned.
A few examples are given below. (Nigh.1.5.10). The form
in
3 vasava� has been listed Rasminamani (refer supta to Nigh.1.5.4).
16. Ravah: The word with its forms occurs in two hundred
and fifty three places. In all the places it is explained
in the sense assigned.
The form rayam occurs in RV. IX. 108.13.
It is explained as ranti pravacchati ksiradikan iti ravo gavah.

17. Radhah: The word occurs in one hundred and forty six
places. Out of these, in one hundred and twenty places the
word is used in the sense assigned. In other places it is
used in the sense of radhaka or anna. Sayapa interpretes the
3 word in two ways; and quotes the Nighantu. Yaska interpretes
