Even in this age of sophistication the
main tools of scientific enquiry remains essentially the
same as it was ages ago
-
experience and observation.
As tools, these are as effective as ever because the fact
remains that nature is inexorable and acts only through
immutable laws which She never transgresses. It is in
our attempt to identify and understand these laws that
the various disciplines of science came about; one
among which is medicine.
Somewhere in the dark ages, when man
started curiously observing the behavior of the wild
animals and started experimenting with juices, fruits,
flowers, leaves, roots and tubers of the plants around
him, the seed of medicine was sown. In India, this
scientific tempo was sustained for a long time and
reached its peak around the period when the treatise
began to be written - popularly known as the Samhita
Kala. At the same time, elsewhere in the west, the quest
to understand and to conquer nature developed an
attitude of drifting away from its all encompassing
effects somewhere during the Renaissance period. Rapid
strides of scientific progress diverted the attention of
the scientists into the eyepiece of the microscope. And
away from the all important relationship of man and
his environment, the holistic view of man as an
epitome was totally forgotten.
