l II. Embrace In the beginning of the second adhyaya Vātsyāyana says that some call this sastra as catuḥsasth because it contains 64 chapters. The followers of Babhravya opine that this part contains eight subjects. Each of these subjects is of eight kinds and eight multiplied by eight makes sixtyfour. Hence, it is called catuḥṣasthi. But the author of Kamasutra remarks that the name sixty- four'is given to this science accidentally. 1 Because
this part not only deals with eight subjects but also
discusses more matters. Though the tree has not seven
leaves it is called saptaparna, though the rice has not
five colours it is called pancavarna. Similar is the
case with figure 64. However, the part called catuhṣasthi
is now treated of and 'embrace' being the first topic
which is considered as follows:
Embrace is the first and essential part of external
coition. It indicates the mutual love of male and female.
Embrace means union of skins. It has much importance in
sexual act. Hence, Havelock Ellis² states- "The skin is
