Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Anu� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Lineages of Anu
Third son of ۲پ, Anu had three sons named Բ, ṣuṣa and Paramesu. They were all very righteous. Բ has a son named DZ. DZ had a son who was famous as Sanjaya. Sanjay’s son was Puranjaya. King Janamejaya became the son of Puranjaya. Like Indra a glorious son was originated from Janamejaya named Ѳś. A son named Ѳ峾 who became the supreme god, great man and 䲹ī emperor of the seven Islands, was born from Ѳś. Ѳ峾 gave birth to two sons. Both of them became known as վپṣu and śīԲ. śīԲ’s had five wives name ṛś�, ṛś�, , ٲś and Devi ṛṣ屹ī. They were the daughter of all the royalty. ṛśa gave birth to ṛg and gave birth to Nava. From ṛś�, ṛśa was born. ٲś’s son was Suvrata. ṛṣ屹īgave birth to a son named king Ś. Ś had four world famous sons named ṛtܻ岹, ܱī, Kekaya and Madraka. They were also famous by name Śgana. Their flourishing kingdoms were known as Kekay (Northwestern part of ղ and Śatalaja, Punjab), Madraka, ܱī (Northern part of Sindh) and Paura . The country of ṛg was famous as Kekay and Ambastha of Suvrata. The capital of ṛśa was ṛṣܰī . Nava was the king of ṣṭ . վپṣu became famous king in the East direction. His son was Vṛṣadratha and Vṛṣadratha’s son was Sena. Sena’s son named ܳٲ was born and ܳٲ’s son was Bali. King Bali gave birth to five ṣeٰᲹ sons who all later became king of the world. He gave birth to five sons named Anga, Vanga, Suhma, ʳṇḍ and ṅg–who are called as sons of Bali.[1]
Anga’s son was king ٲԲ. King Diviratha is said to be the son of ٲԲ. The son of Diviratha was the learned king Dharmaratha. Dharmaratha wasvery rich King. Dharmaratha’s son was Citraratha. He had a son named Satyaratha and he had a son named ٲśٳ who was also famous as dz岹. He had a daughter named ŚԳٲ (Datrimā). Daśarath’s son was a brave warrior named Caturanga Caturanga’s son became known as ṛtܱṣa.ṛtܱṣa had a son named Campa. The capital of Campa was named 䲹 (Bhagalpur) which was earlier known as Ծ . By grace of ūṇa, Campa got a son named Haryanga. The son of Haryanga was Bhadraratha. Bhadraratha’s son was king ṛhٰ첹. He had a son ṛhԳ. Mahātmavān was born from him. Ի ṛhԳ also produced another son named Jayadratha. King ṛhٳ was born from him. ṛhٳ gave birth to a legendary son named Janamejaya. His son was Anga and from Anga ṇa was born. ṇa’s son was ṛṣԲ and his son was ṛtܲԲ. ṛhԳ’s son was Bṛhanmanā. He had two wives. They were both daughters of Śⲹ. Their names were ۲śǻī and ٲ. By the relationof Bṛhanmanā, ۲śǻī gave birth to king Jaydratha and ٲ gave birth to Vijoya. Vijaya’s son was ṛhٱٰܳ and his son was ṛhٳ. ṛhٳ’s son was Mahatma ٲⲹ첹. ٲⲹ첹’s son was Adhiratha. Adhiratha was also known as Suta. Adhiratha had caught Karna (flowing into the river). For this reason, Karna is called as Suta-Putra .[2]
