This is an English study on the Hastalaksanadipika鈥攁 manual depicting the Mudras (gestures) of the Kerala theatre. It is a very popular text supposedly dating to the 10th century A.D. This study also touches the subject of Krsnanattam, Kathakali and Kutiyattam鈥攕ome of India's oldest theatrical traditions in Kerala.

V膧CIK膧BHINAYA ACCORDING TO THE NATYAS膫STRA RELEVANCE OF V膧CIK膧BHINAYA "Speech is the vocal presentation of words and is the basic structure for building up a drama. So, it is essential that this branch of expression should be very carefully exploited. Angika, 膧h膩rya and S盲tvika abhinayas interpret the speech. All s膩stras or sciences are given form in words and are controlled by them. So, all knowledge is gained through word and speech. Therefore, there is nothing that is superior to speech and it is the basis of all activity."
