This essay contains an English study of the Gita-Govinda by Jayadeva and the “Kishore Chandrananda Champu� by Kabisurya Baladev. The Gitagovinda is a Sanskrit Kavya poem of 12th century composed by Jayadeva whereas The “Kishore Chandrananda Champu� was written in the 18th century and was intended for a connection between the medieval poetry and modern literature.

In the Govindalīlāmṛtam text of Vaiṣṇavism the greatness of Rādhā is defined as - का कृष्णस्य प्रणयजनिभू� श्रीमती राधिकैका � कास्� प्रेयस्यानुपमगुण� राधिकैका � चान्या � � जैक्षं केशे दृशि तरलत� निष्ठुरत्व कुचेऽस्य� � वाञ्छापूर्त्ये प्रभवत� सदामुष्य राधै� नान्या ।। [kā kṛṣṇasya praṇayajanibhū� śrīmatī rādhikaikā | kāsya preyasyānupamaguṇ� rādhikaikā na cānyā | | jaikṣa� keśe dṛśi taralatā niṣṭhuratva kuce'syā | vāñchāpūrtye prabhavati sadāmuṣya rādhaiva nānyā || ] 71 - 1.5. In the Rgveda, the oldest scripture of India, the name of Viṣṇu Gopa is found which admits the association of Viṣṇu(Kṛṣṇa) with the Gopa-s: 72 The Padma Purāṇa, the Brahmavaivarta Purāṇa, the Devībhagavatam, the Matsya Purāṇa, the Varāha-purāṇa, the Markandeyapurana, the Vāyu-purāṇa, the Brahmaṇḍapurāṇa define Rādhā significantly but in a scanty manner. The texts like Rādhātāpinī, Kṛṣṇatāpinī, the Rādhikopaniṣad, the Puruṣavodhini, the Śāmarahasyopanisad also express about Rādhā. The Harivaṃśa and the Bhāgavatam provides the affectionate play of Kṛṣṇa and the cowherds. 73 The name of Rādhā occurs only once in the Damayanti Kathā (early tenth century) and once in the Yaśastilakacampū (A.D. 959) and the passages are spare in detail relating to Rādhā.74 Introduction of Rādhā as a character of literature has developed in the local poems of different regions.
