Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.422:

अथ श्यामे� शस्त्रीवं श्यामेत्येवं प्रयुज्यते �
शस्त्री यथेय� श्यामेति तावदेव प्रतीयत� � ४२� �

atha śyāmeva śastrīva� śyāmetyeva� prayujyate |
śastrī yatheya� śyāmeti tāvadeva pratīyate || 422 ||

422. If one says śastrīśyāmeveyam ś峾 ‘She is dark as the dagger is dark�, one understands only as much as from śastri yathā iya� ś峾 ‘She is dark like a dagger.�

Commentary

[The analytic sentence is usually similar to the sentence used in the world and in them, the word ś峾 may be used with both the ܱ貹Բ and the upameya. In a compound, on the other hand, one of them is implied and need not be used. So where is the defect of having to supply much?]
