anasthn膩峁� caiva hi峁僺膩y膩峁� pr膩峁嚹亂膩mena 艣udhyati || 141 ||For the killing of animals with bones, he should give some trifle to a 叠谤腻丑尘补峁嘺; and for the killing of boneless animals, one becomes purified by the 鈥榗ontrol of breath.鈥欌��(141)
Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁a):
鈥�Some trifle鈥� stands for a small thing鈥攕mall in amount, in utility and in price.
According to the older writers the expiation here laid down is for the killing of a single animal.
As a matter of fact, there is no expiation at all for the killing of boneless animals.
鈥�Control of Breath鈥� here stands for self-control.
The killing of 鈥榠nsects and worms,鈥� which has been mentioned among 鈥榙efiling sins鈥� (under 11.70), is to be understood as referring to insects of large size,鈥攖he present verse referring to little insects as mosquitoes and the rest.鈥�(141)

鈥�碍颈帽肠颈迟.鈥欌�斺�極ne pa峁嘺鈥� (N膩r膩ya峁嘺);鈥斺�榚ight handfuls of grain鈥� (Nandana).
This verse is quoted in 笔补谤腻艣补谤补尘腻诲丑补惫补 (Pr膩ya艣citta, p. 66);鈥攁nd in 笔谤腻测补艣肠颈迟迟补惫颈惫别办补 (p. 241), which says that this refers to the killing of only one insect.
