A Br膩hma峁嘺 shall, through compassion, support a 痴补颈艣测补 and a 碍峁�a迟谤颈测补, who are distressed for a livelihood, and should make them do his own work.鈥�(411)

 

Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁�ya):

The Br膩hma峁嘺 shall support them, if they are 鈥�distressed for a livelihood,鈥� by giving them food and other things; i.e., he shall support the 碍峁�a迟谤颈测补 and the 痴补颈艣测补.

鈥�Through compassion鈥欌�攖hrough pity.

鈥�Should make them do his own work.鈥欌�擳he Br膩hma峁嘺鈥檚 鈥榦wn work鈥� consists in the fetching of fuel, water and such things.

Or, the meaning may be that he should make them perform such duties as are the 碍峁�a迟谤颈测补鈥檚 and the 痴补颈艣测补鈥檚 own. That is, the 碍峁�a迟谤颈测补 should be employed in guarding the village and so forth, and the 痴补颈艣测补 in cultivating the land, tending the cattle and so on.

This law relates to the Br膩hma峁嘺 who is possessed of much wealth and property and is, as such, capable of supporting others.

鈥�Own work;鈥欌�攖he phrase implies that he should not employ them in personal attendance, or in any such meat, work as the washing of unclean things and the like.鈥�(411)

This verse is quoted in 痴颈惫腻诲补谤补迟苍腻办补谤补 (p. 253), which explains 鈥�sv膩ni karm膩峁噄鈥� as 鈥榙uties prescribed for their respective castes鈥�;鈥攊n 础辫补谤腻谤办补 (p. 789);鈥攁nd in 痴墨谤补尘颈迟谤辞诲补测补 (Vyavah膩ra, 126a), which says that the meaning is that 鈥榠f a 碍峁�a迟谤颈测补 or a 痴补颈艣测补 has become a slave through want of living, his master should treat him well and take light work from him.鈥�
