In the case of donkeys, goat and sheep the fine shall consist of five 鈥榤膩峁�as鈥�; and the fine shall be one 鈥榤膩峁�a鈥� for the killing of a dog ok a pig.鈥�(298)

 

Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁�ya):

The term 鈥�辫腻帽肠补尘腻峁�i办补鈥� means 鈥榯hat of which five m膩峁�as is the measure鈥�; since the substance is not mentioned of which there shall be 鈥榝ive m膩峁�as,鈥� the most reasonable conclusion is to take the mean, i.e., a substance of medium quality; hence it is 鈥�five m膩峁�as鈥� of silver that is meant; so say some people.

But the right view is to take it as referring to gold; and in this sense the present assertion does not militate against anything that has been said before with regard to its being 鈥榚qual to it鈥� (?)

The final conclusion is that the exact substance is to be determined in accordance with the circumstances of each individual case.鈥�(298)

This verse is quoted in 痴颈惫腻诲补谤补迟苍腻办补谤补 (p; 283), which notes that the 鈥�尘腻峁�a办补鈥� is equal to two 办峁涐梗峁嘺濒补蝉, as declared by 笔腻谤颈箩腻迟补;鈥攊苍 笔补谤腻艣补谤补尘腻诲丑补惫补 (Vyavah膩ra, p. 291);鈥攁nd in 惭颈迟腻办峁�a谤腻 (2.300), where 叠腻濒补尘产丑补峁�峁�墨 adds the following notes:鈥擣or the killing of a donkey, or goat, or sheep, the fine consists in silver, 5 惭腻蝉补蝉 in weight, and not gold, and for the killing of a dog or a pig, one 惭腻峁�a of silver. It notes both the readings, 鈥�辫腻帽肠补尘腻峁�i办补岣�... 尘腻峁�i办补岣�鈥� and 鈥�pa帽ca尘腻峁�a办补岣�...... 尘腻峁�a办补岣�鈥�.
