The monthly 艣谤腻诲诲丑补 to the Pit峁泂 the wise call 鈥渁nv膩h膩rya;鈥� and it should be carefully performed with such meat as has been commended.鈥�(123)

 

Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (尘补苍耻产丑腻峁�y补):

鈥�础苍惫腻丑腻谤测补鈥� is the name of the fee paid to the priests officiating at the 顿补谤峁�a-笔奴谤峁嘺尘腻蝉补 sacrifices; and the monthly 艣谤腻诲诲丑补 offered to the Pit峁泂 is the 鈥槾〔员鼓宄竽灏�测�� fee鈥� for the Ancestors; and the sense of the metaphor is that the Pit峁泂 are as much pleased on receiving the 艣谤腻诲诲丑补-ofterings as the Priests are on receiving the fee. This name serves to indicate that the 艣谤腻诲诲丑补 is performed for the Pit峁泂. But the relation in which the Ancestors stand to the 艣谤腻诲诲丑补 is not the same in which the Deities stand to the 顿补谤艣补 and other sacrifices; as the 艣谤腻诲诲丑补 is performed for their benefit; and it is in this sense that we have the genitive case in 鈥�辫颈迟峁涐箾峁嚹乵 (辫颈迟峁浊箛腻尘?)鈥�; if the Pit峁泂 were the 鈥榙eities,鈥� then there would be no reason for the omitting of the Dative affix.

Another reading giving a totally different sense is 鈥�pi峁囜笉膩n膩m m膩sikam.鈥�

鈥�The wise call 础苍惫腻丑腻谤测补鈥欌赌� This also indicates the obligatory character of the 笔颈迟峁�-测补箩帽补 (which is as necessary as the sacrificial gift); but with this difference that it is not a mere subordinate factor (as the sacrificial fee is).

鈥�It should be performed with such meat as has been comended鈥欌赌�i.e., not prohibited, or particularly recommended; as in 268, where it is said 鈥榳ith the meat of fish the Ancestors remain satisfied for two months, etc., etc.鈥�

This is the principal method; in the absence of meat, curds, butter, milk, cakes, etc., shall be offered, as is going to be prescribed later on.

The meat, however, is only the sauce for the seasoning of such food as cooked rice and the like; it does not consti-tute a food by itself, since the text is going to describe 鈥榮uch subsidiaries us soup and vegetables, etc.鈥� (226), and also 鈥榦n what kinds of food, etc.鈥� (next verse).鈥�(123)

The question that arises now is that the 艣谤腻诲诲丑补 consisting of the several acts of (a) oblations in fire, (b) feeding of Br膩hma峁嘺s, (c) offering of hulls of food, and so forth,鈥攁re they all equally principal and expressible by the name 鈥�艣谤腻诲诲丑补?鈥� Or, some are principal and some secondary? The answer is that, in view of suoh expressions as鈥斺�榦ne should feed Br膩hma峁嘺s in 艣谤腻诲诲丑补,鈥� 鈥榯his man has eaten at the 艣谤腻诲诲丑补,鈥� and so forth, where 鈥榝eeding鈥� and 鈥�艣谤腻诲诲丑补鈥� are spoken of as synonyms,鈥攖he 鈥榝eeding of Br膩hma峁嘺s appears to be the principal factor.鈥� To the same end our Author says鈥�

This verse is quoted in 贬别尘腻诲谤颈 (艢r膩ddha, p. 573);鈥攁nd in 骋辞诲腻诲丑补谤补辫补诲诲丑补迟颈 (K膩la, p. 431), which expounds the name 鈥�补苍惫腻丑腻谤测补尘鈥� as 鈥�anu, pa艣c膩t, 膩h膩ryam k膩ryam,鈥� and says that this the learned call 鈥�顿腻谤艣补-艢谤腻诲诲丑补.鈥�
