Letter 84 - Maintaining a link with Guru and ղṣṇ,...

Maintaining a link with guru and ղṣṇ allows us to render real, practical service Answers to questions about various īٲԲ (Maṅgala Ārati, Sarvasva Tomāra, Śī Guru-ṇa-padma and Hari Haraye Nama ṛṣṇa)

श्री श्री गुरु-गौराङ्गौ जयतः

śī śī guru-gaurāṅgau jayata

Śī Vinoda-bihārī Gauḍīya Ѳṻ 28 Haldar Bagan Lane Kolkata4 23/12/1985

Ա貹ṣu

—! I received your two letters, one dated 6/12/85, delivered by courier, and later, one dated 18/12/85, delivered by mail.

“Service to guru is the exclusive purpose of life, and I am forever deprived of that.

If that is the main thing you want to express, then I have nothing to say. We live in the ṻ-mandira for the service of Śī Hari, guru, and ղṣṇ and out of a longing for their love. All our efforts are dedicated to that noble end. It is possible to pursue this grand objective wherever one may dwell.

Those who have maintained a link with guru and ղṣṇ render real, practical service, while those who are without shelter hold on to life in vain.

आश्र लैया भज, तारे कृष् नाहि त्यज, आर सब मर अकार

Āśraya laiyā bhaje, tāre kṛṣṇa nāhi tyaje, āra saba mare akāraṇa[1]

ṛṣṇa never abandons those who worship under the shelter of the ղṣṇ. All others perish in vain.

This message of the ᲹԲ inspires us in service in a special way. Patience and enthusiasm increase the delight of service. Hence, occasional restlessness and discouragement are never capable of overshadowing a real -󲹰ī. You are intelligent. What I hope for from you is that you will understand all these matters and forever be inspired in the dharma of service.

I am providing brief answers to your questions:

(1) Singing the poet’s line two times first

श्री केशवेर दा कर ना-सङ्कीर्तन

śī keśavera kare nāma-saṅīٲԲ

“Is custom and constitutes proper etiquette.

īٲԲ is performed under the guidance of the ղṣṇ ᲹԲ. The poet cannot use prabhu śī ś himself. The guidance of ղṣṇ is the root of ղṣṇ dharma. That is why the line the poet has composed is sung first and then we sing [an alternative line] in a mood of servitude to him. The author and poet has humbly written compositions in many places. Will we not discuss them? We must study them and convey their purport to everyone. “Ś Keśava Prabhu has humbly written abhāgā ś –the unlucky Keśava. That is the subject of our study.

(2) In the Sarvasva Tomāra īٲԲ, the original, accurate rendering is:

भकतिविनो

bhakativinoda, tomāre 첹, boliyā varaṇa kare

“Bhaktivinoda accepts You as his sole maintainer.

If bhakativinoda, tomāre , boliyā jānaho more –Bhaktivinoda, know Me to be your maintainer has been printed in the current edition, then this is wholly erroneous and meaningless.

(3) In the Śī Guru-ṇa-padma īٲԲ, hā hā prabho karo , deho more pada-, ebe yaśa ghuṣuka tribhuvana is the original line. This īٲԲ of Śīla Narottama Ṭhܰ is very long; that is why the last line of another īٲԲ by him has been incorporated and, at present, it is sung like this: narottama lailo śṇa or tuwā pade lainu śṇa. In this case, the use of the word narottama is correct, because there is mention of the poet. Singing narottama lailo śṇa first and then singing tuwā pade lainu śṇa is appropriate.

(4) Śī caitanya-nityānanda-śī-advaita—DZ”–these three are ṣaⲹ-vigraha or ǰ-󲹲; hence, they are maintainers and nurturers. Previously, it was like this in the 貹屹ī [Bengali songbook] collections. Later, ī was printed by mistake. To suddenly mention a śپ in the middle of listing ṣaⲹ-vigraha is incongruous; and Sītā cannot be the śپ of all three. Considering all this, Gauḍīya ղṣṇ use the word DZ instead of ī. Know that you have my affectionate blessings. Iti

Your eternal well-wisher,
Śī Bhaktivedānta 峾Բ
