viśvātmā (विश्वात्मा).—m (S) Soul of the universe; the anima mundi or universal Spirit. A title of brahma. Note. Ordinarily brahma is represented, not as the soul or spirit, but as the substance or essence, of the universe, all objective existencies being but himself expanded. There is here however no discrepancy if the universe be apprehended, as we are taught it is, to be purely spiritual.
