Source: Wisdom Library: Nāṭya-śāstraԲⲹ (वाक्याभिनय) refers to “representation through words� and is another name for simply ⲹ, one of the representations through which the body (śī) expresse itself, according to the Nāṭyaśāstra chapter 24. These bodily expressions, or representations (abhinaya), are to be executed in accordance with the psychological states (屹) and sentiments (rasa) available in the dramatic play (ṭy). It forms a part of 峾ԲԲⲹ, or “harmonious representation�.
: Shodhganga: Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (ns)Բⲹ (वाक्याभिनय) refers to one of the six aspects of 峾ԲԲⲹ (“harmonious representation�), according to the Nāṭyaśāstra of Bharatamuni (2003: GOS Vol. III: pp.146,149).—G.H. Tarlekar explains that 峾Բⲹ-Բⲹ refers to basic representation which is presented using the head, hand, waist, chest, shanks and the thighs simultaneously. According to him, it is produced by the representation of speech, gestures and temperament (sattva). Abhinavagupta refers to the older authorities who followed the school of Kohala, who consider 峾ԲԲⲹ to be of six varieties. Bharata has not spoken of these six varieties but does mention six aspects of 峾ԲԲⲹ [e.g., Բⲹ].

Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, ṭyśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
