India history and geography
: What is India: Inscriptions of the 艢il膩h膩rasSm膩rik膩 refers to the fines levied for offences, and was a major source of income during the rule of the 艢il膩h膩ra dynasty (r. 765-1215 A.D.).鈥擨n some records the fines levied for ten offences are mentioned as transferred to the donees of land-grants. These are probably identical with the ten sins enumerated in the 艢ukran墨tis膩ra, viz., murder, theft, adultery, slander, harsh language, lying, divulgence of secrets, evil design, atheism and perverseness. Some 艢il膩h膩ra inscriptions specially mention kum膩r墨s膩hasa (crime against an unmarried girl) as an instance of it. These fines for offences were determined by a committee of sixteen members. It was known as 蝉尘腻谤颈办腻, probably because it called attention to the relevant rules in the Sm峁泃is.
