The Sevenfold Analysis (in Madhyamaka) is known in Tibetan as rnam bdun gyi dpyad pa.—The Mādhyamikas claim that when we see that dharmas have no mode of subsistence aside from that posited on the basis of their appearance to the mind, that is the negation of the object of negation. The Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika systems assert in common that the apprehension of true existence is the cognition that apprehends such an object of negation. The logical analyses are condensed into two: the most important reasoning negating that object of negation is the sevenfold analysis; abridging that produces the analysis free of apprehending the one and the many. The latter mode of analysis is better known.

The Sevenfold Analysis is:

  1. the investigation whether an entity exists: as separate from its components,
  2. the investigation whether an entity exists: as identical to its components,
  3. the investigation whether an entity exists: (as) possessing its components,
  4. the investigation whether an entity exists: (as) inherently dependent upon its components,
  5. the investigation whether an entity exists: as the basis upon which the components depend,
  6. the investigation whether an entity exists: as the collection of components,
  7. the investigation whether an entity exists: as the shape of its components.
