The Purana (पुरा�, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
Shilpashastra (iconography)
: Shodhganga: The significance of the mūla-beras (śilpa)ٳٳī is the name of a deity depicted at the Kallazhagar Temple in Madurai, which represents a sacred place for the worship of Viṣṇu.—ٳٳ� is represented in 岹-ٳԲ첹 with four hands. The upper two hands are in 첹ٲīܰ-ٲ holding the conch and the discus. The lower two hands are in Բ (teaching, preaching) ܻ and 첹ṭa첹-ٲ. A devotee is found holding ñᲹ-hasta. While representing in dance, ٳٳī is found in 岹-ٳԲ첹 with four hands. The upper two hands hold 첹ٲīܰ-hasta and the lower hands hold ṃsⲹ-ٲ and kapittha-hasta.
