Natyashastra (theatrics and dramaturgy)
: Shodhganga: Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (ns)Kohalamata (कोहलमत) refers to one of the works ascribed to Kohala—a celebrated authority of the ancient period along with others such as Bharata, Yāṣṭika, Śārdūla, Kāśyapa etc.—Kohala, though a contemporary of Bharata is believed to be one of the pioneering 峦ⲹ of the śī tradition. [...] The works attributed to Kohala can be divided into two categories. One being works available to us from primary sources (manuscripts) [e.g., the Kohalamata] and the other representing works which we come to know from secondary sources (other works which refer to them).—The content of Kohalamatam, on examination is seen to be more or less same as Svaratālādi-lakṣaṇa [徱ṣaṇa].
Regarding the name Kohalamatam: Girija Easwaran treats Kohalamatam only as an abridged version of Svaratālādilakṣaṇam. However, in the text of Svaratālādilakṣaṇa, the Kohala-Mataṅga-ṃv岹 is not to be found. [...] In the Nāṭyasarvasvadīpikā there are references to Kohalamatam in the section. Therefore, the title Kohalamatam has been in existence for some time. The same though, cannot be said about Svaratālādilakṣaṇam whose abridgement Kohalamatam is supposed to be. So, it could probably be said that Svaratālādi-lakṣaṇa is a generic title given to this work, perhaps during the process of cataloguing. This might not be the actual title of this work, Also, Svaratālādilakṣaṇam could be a larger, more complete version of Kohalamatam.

Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, ṭyśٰ) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
